Our history dates back to 1911 when Charles Hook Tompkins founded our company, Tompkins Builders – a prominent name synonymous with construction in the Washington, DC area. We offer a full range of construction-related services in both the private and public sectors. From Pre-construction to Construction Management, Design-Build Contracting to General Contracting, our firm specializes in base-building construction, renovations, restorations, additions, and tenant fit-out projects. These disciplines, along with quality service, results-oriented management, and experienced personnel, provide the foundation of our construction practice.

Over the years, our company has evolved into a prominent force throughout the Mid-Atlantic States. Currently, we manage construction projects valued at over $500M, and are supported by an experienced team of over 150 customer-oriented personnel. Additionally, Tompkins is recognized as one of the largest General Contractors in the Washington, DC area, and has received over 200 construction awards. We attribute this success and business longevity to sound principles of quality, integrity and focus on client needs.

This year Grunley Construction Company, Inc. celebrates 55 years of service to the metropolitan Washington region. Grunley’s locally-owned and operated predecessor firm was founded in 1955 and in 1988 Mr. Kenneth Grunley and his father, Mr. Martin Grunley, formed Grunley Construction. Ken has served as President of Grunley Construction since 1994.

It specializes in renovations, restorations, and modernizations of large-scale government and commercial buildings, and educational facilities and has also completed new facilities and additions to existing buildings for both public and private sector clients. Many of our projects involve historic, secure, occupied facilities and on occasion a portion or all of the work is performed at night and/or on weekends to meet the special requirements of our clients. We have worked on a variety of project types under an array of contracting methods.
